Data Center Liquid Cooling
Rack power is rising from 10 kW toward 50–100 kW and beyond, pushing air cooling to its limits. Cold-plate liquid cooling brings coolant straight to CPU and GPU cold plates — and the circulation pump is the heart of the secondary loop.
Overview
Overview
AI training and inference clusters are driving data center heat density up fast. Cold-plate liquid cooling keeps the familiar server form factor and only replaces the hottest chips’ heat sinks with liquid cold plates — currently the best balance between retrofit cost and cooling capacity.
In this system the CDU (coolant distribution unit) controls temperature, pressure and flow on the secondary side, and the circulation pump decides whether coolant reaches every cold plate steadily and continuously.
Key challenges
- 01 24/7 operation A stopped pump means lost compute, so redundancy and online replacement are essential.
- 02 Rising power density GPU rack heat loads keep climbing, and flow and head requirements climb with them.
- 03 Efficiency and PUE Pump power counts toward facility energy, calling for variable-speed, load-following operation.
- 04 Fluid cleanliness Cold plate micro-channels are sensitive to particles and corrosion, requiring low-extractable, corrosion-resistant wetted materials.
Scenarios
Applications
-
Room-level / in-row CDUs
High-flow secondary circulation with main/standby or N+1 pumps and closed-loop differential-pressure control.
Recommended: CP-H High-flow CDU pump -
In-rack CDUs
Tight space, often 48 V DC supply, with low noise and fast replacement.
-
DI water / fluorinated fluid loops
Clean or special fluids requiring zero leakage and stainless wetted parts.
Recommended: CP-M Magnetic drive pump
System solution
Cold-plate secondary loop
The CDU exchanges heat with facility water through a plate heat exchanger; the pump distributes secondary coolant via manifolds to each server's cold plates, and the warm return flows back to the CDU.

Case study
CDU pumps for an AI data center (sample case)
- Challenge
- About 60 kW per rack; the CDU required redundant pumps that could be replaced without downtime.
- Solution
- CP-H220-35 pumps in a 1+1 arrangement in drawer cassettes, connected to the CDU controller over Modbus with closed-loop control on supply/return differential pressure.
- Result
- Online pump replacement without downtime and markedly lower pump power at part load. (Sample content; real case to follow.)
