Compressors & Industrial Gearboxes

Centrifugal compressors, steam turbines and their speed-increasing gearboxes run fast, and their bearings and gear teeth depend on continuous pressure lubrication. Such machines usually have an independent lube oil system with redundant main and standby pumps.

Overview

Overview

High-speed rotating machinery is demanding about lubrication: supply must be continuous, pressure steady, and oil temperature and cleanliness under control. A lube oil system concentrates these requirements in one independent system — and the pump is its only source of power.

Key challenges

  • 01 Never lose oil A few seconds without oil can damage bearings; automatic main/standby switchover and accumulators are needed.
  • 02 Low pulsation Pressure pulsation causes pipe vibration and disturbs bearing oil films.
  • 03 Long continuous runs Machines run year-round, so pumps and systems must allow maintenance online.
  • 04 Project specifications Often required to meet customer specifications or standards such as API 614.

System solution

Lube oil system supply loop

The main pump draws from the tank and pressurises the oil; after the cooler and duplex filter it is supplied at set pressure to the gearbox and bearings. The standby pump starts automatically if the main pump fails or pressure drops.

Case study

Lube oil system for a centrifugal compressor train (sample case)

Challenge
Automatic main/standby switchover, online duplex filter changeover and remote monitoring via the plant DCS were required.
Solution
Packaged LOS-160 with GL-S-150 three-screw main and standby pumps; the PLC monitors pressure, temperature, level and differential pressure and reports over Modbus.
Result
Steady oil pressure during switchover, meeting the machine interlock requirements. (Sample content; real case to follow.)
