Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles run two thermal loops — coolant for the battery and power electronics, oil for the oil-cooled e-drive. Electric water pumps and electric oil pumps drive them.

Overview

Overview

As e-drive power density grows, a water jacket alone can no longer remove enough heat from the motor windings. Oil cooling lets dielectric oil touch the windings and bearings directly for more effective cooling — and lubricates the reduction gears at the same time.

The electric oil pump is independent of vehicle speed and meters oil precisely by temperature and load, while the battery-side electric water pump works with the heat pump to heat and cool.

Key challenges

  • 01 Automotive reliability Vibration, thermal shock, salt spray and EMC validated to automotive processes.
  • 02 Cold start Oil is extremely viscous at -40 °C; the pump must start reliably and build pressure fast.
  • 03 NVH Without engine noise to mask it, pump noise and vibration are easily noticed.
  • 04 Energy use Speed on demand limits the impact of thermal management on range.

Scenarios

Applications

  • Battery pack cooling

An electric water pump drives coolant through the battery cold plates, working with the heat pump to heat or cool.

  • Oil-cooled e-drives

An electric oil pump sprays oil onto stator windings and bearings and lubricates the reduction gears.

  • Hybrid transmission lubrication

The electric oil pump maintains lubrication and cooling while the engine is off.

System solution

Oil-cooled e-drive loop

The electric oil pump draws from the sump; after the oil cooler, flow splits to spray the stator windings and bearings and to lubricate the reduction gears, then returns to the sump.

Challenge
Start at -40 °C and coordinate with the vehicle thermal controller over CAN FD.
Solution
EOP-12-15 flange-mounted on the e-drive housing, with FOC start-up tuned for cold oil and flow scheduled by motor temperature.
Result
