Energy Storage

Battery cells are sensitive to temperature and temperature spread. Liquid-cooling units use a circulation pump to drive coolant through cold plates under the battery modules, keeping cell temperature and spread in range and extending cycle life.

Overview

Overview

The safety and life of an energy storage system depend heavily on cell temperature. Compared with air cooling, liquid cooling exchanges heat more efficiently and evenly, and has become the mainstream solution for large storage systems.

The circulation pump in the cooling unit runs continuously outdoors over a wide temperature range while adjusting flow to the battery’s charge and discharge load.

Key challenges

  • 01 Temperature uniformity Cell temperature spread affects consistency and life, so loop flow must be even and steady.
  • 02 Outdoor conditions Container systems face heat, frost and condensation; pumps need wide temperature range and high protection.
  • 03 Long, maintenance-free life Storage systems run for many years and the pump's reliability must match.
  • 04 Cost and size Limited space calls for a highly integrated pump, motor and controller.

System solution

Battery cabinet cooling loop

The chiller cools the coolant, the pump sends it through distribution lines into each battery module's cold plate, and the warm coolant returns to the chiller.
